The Stop Watch

They stopped in midair

you stepped out from behind them

curious to see them

exposed

your old thoughts
living creatures stopped in time
as they were going here
and there
connecting with themselves
beyond anything you knew

You noted how ‘happy’
lined up with ’sad’
to make ‘nonsense’
eclipse them both
as it pulled ‘next’
by a string through a hole in
“I’m sorry”

You ask: When did you know you would save me?

And Jesus Says: ..Before a thousand of your lies ago..
as He holds up His hands

You walk away from your former speech
hear it creak with age
the grey hairs sprouting on it
here and there
as it spins in the people for whom it is
still a god

You say : ..Look out! Here comes I’m sorry..
as they smile to see you are
simple

“Of course it does. Only its real name is maturity.” They say.

You look quickly at Jesus
and He Says: They are not mine.
I will send you elsewhere.

You know they remember only your lies

You turn to Jesus: ..You always intended to..

He smiles. ..save you?..

You nod. ..You were..

His smile fades: ..setting them up to not hear you? Yes.

You say: Maybe they didn’t understand and if..
Jesus Laughs with the Laugh of a multitude.

You are not the first.

Or the last.

Hebrews 4:1-16 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you might seem to have failed of it. For indeed we have had glad tidings presented to us, even as they also; but the word of the report did not profit *them*, not being mixed with faith in those who heard. For we enter into the rest who have believed; as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest; although the works had been completed from the foundation of the world. For he has said somewhere of the seventh day thus, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works: and in this again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remains that some enter into it, and those who first received the glad tidings did not enter in on account of not hearkening to the word, again he determines a certain day, saying, in David, ‘To-day,’ after so long a time; (according as it has been said before), To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had brought them into rest, he would not have spoken afterwards about another day. There remains then a sabbatism to the people of God. For he that has entered into his rest, he also has rested from his works, as God did from his own. Let us therefore use diligence to enter into that rest, that no one may fall after the same example of not hearkening to the word. For the word of God is living and operative, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and penetrating to the division of soul and spirit, both of joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is not a creature unapparent before him; but all things are naked and laid bare to his eyes, with whom we have to do. Having therefore a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession. For we have not a high priest not able to sympathise with our infirmities, but tempted in all things in like manner, sin apart. Let us approach therefore with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and find grace for seasonable help.

Matthew 10:14-20 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in judgment-day than for that city. Behold, *I* send you as sheep in the midst of wolves; be therefore prudent as the serpents, and guileless as the doves. But beware of men; for they will deliver you up to sanhedrims, and scourge you in their synagogues; and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations. But when they deliver you up, be not careful how or what ye shall speak; for it shall be given to you in that hour what ye shall speak. For *ye* are not the speakers, but the Spirit of your Father which speaks in you.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen
